Agentic Growth Engine article: Google says AEO is still SEO

Google Just Said AEO Is ‘Still SEO.’ Here Is What That Actually Means for Your Business

Google recently published new guidance telling business owners that optimizing for AI search is ‘still SEO,’ and that you do not need special markup, an llms.txt file, or any secret schema to show up in AI Overviews. That is technically true. It is also the kind of half-answer that gets a small business owner to do nothing. Here is the honest version.

What Google actually said

In its AI optimization guide, Google made a few things clear. To appear in AI features like AI Overviews and AI Mode, a page has to be indexed, crawlable, and eligible to show with a normal search snippet. The content has to be unique and genuinely useful, not a commodity rehash of what everyone else already published. Structured data is not required for AI search, though it still helps you qualify for rich results. And the popular hacks, llms.txt files, stuffing in special markup, chopping your content into tiny fragments, are a waste of time. Google ignores them.

Google also rolled out a Generative AI performance report inside Search Console, so for the first time you can actually see whether your pages are showing up inside AI answers.

Why ‘it is still SEO’ is only half the story

The plumbing is the same. The game is not. Traditional SEO was about ranking a blue link so someone would click it. AI search is about getting named inside the answer itself, often with no click at all. A buyer asks ChatGPT or Google which company to hire, and the engine hands back a short list. You are either on it or you are invisible. That is a very different outcome than being result number six on page one, even if the work that gets you there rhymes with old SEO.

So when Google says AEO is still SEO, do not read that as permission to ignore AI search. Read it as confirmation that the businesses doing the fundamentals well are the ones AI will recommend.

What actually decides whether AI names your business

It is not markup tricks. Across the major 2026 studies of how ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews choose what to cite, the same pattern keeps showing up. Three things move the needle.

Useful, crawlable content that answers real questions. Not thin filler. Clear, direct answers to the exact questions your buyers ask before they are ready to hire. If an engine cannot find a good answer on your site, it pulls one from a competitor.

A business identity engines can resolve. A consistent name, address, and phone number, a claimed Google Business Profile, and real reviews. If an AI cannot tell exactly which business you are, or confuses you with a similarly named company, it defaults to one it can identify with confidence.

Third-party corroboration. The 2026 citation research is blunt about this: AI answers lean on a concentrated set of trusted sources, and they cross-check a business against the wider web before recommending it. If nothing outside your own website mentions you, engines hesitate. Reviews, directories, press, and partner references are what earn the recommendation.

What a service business should do this quarter

Skip the hacks. Do the work that compounds. Publish answer-first content on the questions your buyers actually ask, one strong piece at a time. Get your entity straight: claim and complete your Google Business Profile, make your name and contact details identical everywhere, and start collecting reviews. Earn a handful of real off-site mentions so engines have something to corroborate. Then watch the new Search Console AI report to see what is landing.

None of that is a trick, and that is the whole point. Google just told everyone the shortcuts do not work. The businesses that win in AI search will be the ones that treated it as fundamentals while their competitors waited for a hack.

The bottom line

AEO being ‘still SEO’ does not make it optional. It makes it winnable. The window right now is that most service businesses are still treating AI visibility as something to deal with later. The ones moving now are the ones AI will be recommending a year from now.
