Real-life examples of agentic AI include Google Search calling local businesses to check prices for you, ChatGPT agent filling out forms in a browser, Klarna’s assistant resolving customer service chats, coding agents that open pull requests, and Waymo’s driverless rides. In small businesses, agents reply to new leads, book appointments, request reviews and text back missed calls.
Most people have used AI to write something. Fewer have watched AI actually do something: place a call, complete a booking, update a record. That is the line between generative AI and agentic AI, and it already shows up in products you can use today.
Below are 12 real, verifiable examples, followed by the examples that matter most if you run a service business. If you want the definition first, start with what agentic AI is.
What makes an AI example “agentic”?
An AI tool is agentic when it is given a goal and then takes steps on its own to reach it. It gathers information, decides what to do next, uses other tools (a browser, a phone line, a calendar, a CRM) and checks the result. A chatbot that only answers questions is not agentic. A chatbot that answers, qualifies the person and books the appointment is.
Gartner describes the shift this way: agentic AI has “the capability to act autonomously to complete tasks,” unlike earlier generative AI that mostly supplies information (Gartner). For a side-by-side breakdown, see agentic AI vs generative AI.
What are real-life examples of agentic AI?
Here are 12 examples from real companies, grouped loosely by what the agent does.
1. Google Search calling local businesses for you
In Google Search, a signed-in US user can ask Google to contact local businesses to check pricing and availability. Google’s AI makes the calls and emails back a summary of quotes. Google lists auto repair, hair salons, pet groomers, wellness centers and driving schools as covered categories and says it is expanding (Google Search Help). Businesses can manage whether they receive these calls through Business Profile settings (Search Engine Journal).
2. Google AI Mode booking restaurant tables
You tell AI Mode the party size, time and type of food. It searches availability across reservation platforms like OpenTable and SevenRooms and hands you options you can book in one step. The feature launched in the US in August 2025 and expanded globally in April 2026 (Semrush).
3. ChatGPT agent completing tasks in a browser
ChatGPT agent runs a virtual browser. It can click, fill in forms, navigate websites and use connected apps such as Gmail and Google Calendar. It pauses for confirmation before high-impact actions and hands control back to you when a login is needed (OpenAI Help Center).
4. Amazon “Buy for Me”
When Amazon does not sell an item, the Buy for Me beta can purchase it from the brand’s own website on your behalf, securely passing your payment and address to that site’s checkout. Amazon launched it for a subset of US customers in April 2025 (Amazon).
5. Klarna’s customer service assistant
In its first month, Klarna’s AI assistant handled 2.3 million conversations, two-thirds of its customer service chats. Klarna said it did the work of 700 full-time agents and cut average resolution time from 11 minutes to under 2 (Klarna via PR Newswire). In 2025 Klarna began recruiting human support staff again so customers can always reach a person (CX Dive). That is its own lesson: agents work best with a clear human handoff.
6. HubSpot’s Customer Agent
HubSpot’s Customer Agent answers questions across chat, email, forms, WhatsApp, Messenger and voice, takes action in the CRM and hands off to a person with full context when it can’t resolve the issue (HubSpot).
7. GitHub Copilot’s cloud agent
A developer assigns a task. The agent researches the repository, writes a plan, makes code changes on a branch and prepares a pull request for human review (GitHub Docs).
8. Claude Code
Anthropic’s Claude Code is an agentic coding tool that works in the terminal, understands a codebase, executes routine tasks and handles git workflows from plain-language instructions (Anthropic on GitHub).
9. Shopify Sidekick
Sidekick has direct access to a store’s Shopify data and takes action in the admin: setting up discounts, organizing collections, building email campaigns and configuring inventory alerts. It is included with Shopify plans (Shopify).
10. Zapier Agents
Zapier Agents connect to more than 9,000 apps and can run on command or on a schedule, handling jobs like lead qualification, research and meeting prep (Zapier).
11. Podium’s AI Employee
Aimed at home services, auto, retail and aesthetics businesses, Podium’s AI Employee replies to leads around the clock, qualifies them, books and confirms appointments and re-engages past customers to fill calendar gaps (Podium).
12. Waymo driverless rides
Not every agent lives in software. Waymo’s vehicles perceive the road, plan and drive with no one behind the wheel. Waymo passed 20 million lifetime trips by the end of 2025 and plans to expand to more than 20 additional cities in 2026 (Waymo).
Which agentic AI apps can you use today?
Of the examples above, several are available to consumers or small teams right now: Google’s AI calling and AI Mode booking in Search, ChatGPT agent on paid ChatGPT plans, Shopify Sidekick inside Shopify, and Zapier Agents. Business agents such as HubSpot’s Customer Agent and Podium usually require a subscription and setup. What are examples of agentic AI in a service business?
The examples that pay off for a roofer, law firm, med spa or insurance agency are less flashy. They sit between the moment a customer reaches out and the moment revenue lands.
- Instant lead reply. A form fill or ad lead arrives at 9:40 p.m. The agent texts back within seconds, asks two or three qualifying questions and routes hot leads to the owner. This is speed to lead handled by software instead of whoever happens to be awake.
- Appointment booking. Instead of “someone will call you,” the agent offers real open slots from your calendar, books the job, sends confirmations and reminders, and reschedules when asked.
- Missed call text-back. When a call goes unanswered, the system texts the caller right away (“Sorry we missed you, how can we help?”) and continues the conversation by text.
- Review requests. When a job is marked complete, the agent asks the customer for a Google review, follows up once, and flags unhappy responses for a human before they turn into public complaints.
- Database reactivation. The agent works through old leads and past customers with a relevant offer or check-in, then books whoever replies. Podium markets exactly this: re-engaging past customers to fill calendar gaps (Podium).
- Answering AI callers. As Google’s AI starts phoning businesses for quotes, the business that answers clearly, with prices and availability that match its website, is the one that gets included in the summary.
What do these examples mean for your business?
Three takeaways.
- Customers will increasingly send agents to shop for them. Google calling for quotes, AI Mode booking tables and Amazon buying from brand sites all point the same way. If an agent can’t find your prices, hours and booking options, it moves on. That is why answer engine optimization now sits next to SEO.
- Your follow-up has to be as fast as their agent. When the first business to respond wins, a system that replies in seconds beats a great team that replies tomorrow.
- Keep a human in the loop. Gartner predicts over 40% of agentic AI projects will be canceled by the end of 2027 because of rising costs, unclear value or weak risk controls (Gartner). Start with narrow, measurable jobs.
This is the thinking behind an agentic growth engine: get found in AI answers, convert the visit, and let agents handle the follow-up that busy owners drop.
Frequently asked questions
What is an example of agentic AI in everyday life?
A clear everyday example is Google Search calling local businesses on your behalf. You describe what you need, such as a pet grooming appointment, and Google’s AI phones nearby businesses, asks about price and availability, and emails you a summary. You gave it a goal, and it made the calls and gathered the answers without you picking up the phone.
Is ChatGPT an example of agentic AI?
Standard ChatGPT, which answers prompts, is mostly generative AI. ChatGPT agent is agentic. It runs a virtual browser, clicks buttons, fills out forms and uses connected apps like Gmail and Google Calendar to complete multi-step tasks. It asks for confirmation before high-impact actions and hands control back to you for logins, so a person stays in charge.
Is Siri or Alexa agentic AI?
Classic voice assistants mostly follow single commands, like setting a timer or playing a song, so they are generally not considered agentic. The difference is whether the system can take a broader goal, plan several steps, use other tools and adjust when something changes. As assistants add multi-step task handling, the line is blurring, but a command follower is not an agent.
What are examples of agentic AI in customer service?
Klarna’s assistant handled two-thirds of its customer service chats in its first month. HubSpot’s Customer Agent answers questions across chat, email, WhatsApp and voice, takes action in the CRM and hands complex cases to a person. For small businesses, the most common version is an AI chat or text agent that answers questions, qualifies leads and books appointments.
What are examples of agentic AI for small businesses?
The highest-value examples are instant replies to new leads, appointment booking from real calendar availability, missed call text-back, automated Google review requests and reactivation campaigns to old leads and past customers. Each one replaces a task that usually falls through the cracks when the owner is busy, and each one can be measured in booked jobs.
Are self-driving cars agentic AI?
Yes. A driverless vehicle like a Waymo perceives its surroundings, plans a route, makes decisions in real time and acts on them with no human driver. That is the same loop that defines software agents: observe, decide, act, check. The difference is that the actions happen on a road instead of inside a browser, CRM or phone system.
Can agentic AI make phone calls?
Yes. Google’s AI already calls some local businesses to check prices and availability for users, and many businesses now use voice AI agents to answer inbound calls, qualify callers and book appointments. In the US, the FCC has ruled that AI-generated voices in robocalls fall under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, so outbound AI calling needs proper consent.
